The best approach is the direct approach if it is possible. If it something that might lead to harassment or discrimination request a meeting with the boss, HR, and the co-worker and express your feeling of walking on eggshells. If the direct approach does not work, discuss your concerns with HR and your boss (maybe) for their professional recommendations to you. The goal - cover your butt by doing the right thing before you say the wrong thing.
